Med alla förorter inräknade bor 616 561 invånare i Boise. Cirka 0,8 procent av befolkningen i staden är afroamerikaner. Staden är belägen i den sydvästra delen av delstaten, cirka 60 kilometer öster om gränsen till delstaten Oregon.

The name may derive from earlier mountain men who named the river that flows through it. In the 1820s, French Canadian fur trappers set trap lines in the vicinity. Set in a high-desert area, the tree-lined valley of the Boise River became a distinct landmark, an oasis dominated by cottonwood trees. They called this ”La rivière boisée”, which means ”the wooded river.”
